Updates Galore...
goodness me! i never was any good at keeping a "daily" journal. though i suppose the blog is a little different seeing as i now have an audience other than dear diary--who is essentially myself.
at any rate, no regrets. school is once again in full swing and i'm working two jobs so i feel no remorse for my lack of contribution to the blog (that's certainly not true now is it or else i wouldn't be mentioning it here would i?) my oh my where do i begin. well, for one thing, i'm quite pleased with my classes this semester. i'm taking courses in the 18th century novel, critical theory, and --wait for it--a creative writing poetry course. hooray for that. the writing course is splendid actually. our prof is very encouraging but fair with his criticism and just taking the course for credit is helping to give myself permission to write creatively while i'm also taking "academic" classes. i'm really excited about the project i want to take on for the final composition. that being a series of poems about the domestic realm of cooking/baking and the negotiation of creation that happens in the kitchen--which can be an empowering thing--versus the sticky history of women's "place" in the kitchen, and the politics of feminism rife in that site. very excited about this project.
i'm also quite happy to note that i am tutoring. i have several students who are all quite enthusiastic and a pleasure to tutor. it almost doesn't feel like work sometimes so i know that it's a good fit for the time being.
well, Graham and i bought ourselves a digital camera for 'christmas'--that holiday which we persist in celebrating year after year even though we don't consider ourselves religious or christian for that matter. in any case, there will soon be some pics up as soon as we reduce their kilo-byte or something for the web.
the holidays--despite thier religious insignificance to me--were lovely. being in Ontario with my family that i haven't been with during the holidays for years was just splended--really! there really is something to a house jam-packed with people with libations, fatty foods, and several games of cards going. it was very different for Graham, coming from a quiet small family as he does to my side of the tracks, where mom has 7 brothers and sisters and dad has 4. yes yes and all the aunts and uncles have kiddies--some have kiddies who have kiddies. this was a very different holiday than what i'm used to the past 5 years. oh and that brings me back to the subject of baking (go figure). it is such a social space at times. during the holidays i spent some time baking with my aunt C. and best friend K. The gingerbread house K. and I made was such a sticky collaborative effort that i'm impressed we didn't get a little bitter with eachother about the construction. as the pictures will eventually show--it turned out just fine and tasted good too.
now for the brief but "informative" list of updates:
1. what i'm reading--(yes including school stuff) *deep breath*:
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte (novel)
Love in Excesss - Eliza Haywood (novel)
Castle of Otranto - Horace Walpole (novel)
Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure - John Cleland (novel)
The Old English Baron - Clara Reeve (novel)
Les Liasons Dangereuses - Choderlos De Laclos (novel)
The Vision Tree - Phillis Webb (poetry)
The Midnight - Susan Howe (poetry)
Isla Negra - Pablo Neruda (poetry)
+ a vast selection of literary criticism and articles I don't care to list off right now-- good stuff nonetheless
2. what I'm watching/ have watched recently (keeping in mind that Graham's friend J. has become our movie advisor--as Graham hasn't see such classics as The Godfather, Apocolypse Now, etc. I haven't seen these movies in a while--but I vaguely remember a bunch of them from my child/teenagehood):
Brokeback Mountain (so good *sniffle*)
Apocolypse Now (*shiver*)
Taxi Driver (a creepy classic)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (seasons 1, 2, and 3 done as of late)
Dangerous Liasons (yeah John Malkovich)
3. What I'm listening to (hooray for burgeoning music tastes and thanks to Kath mostly for leting me molest her cd collection--oh and pandora of course.):
The Decemberists
Stars
Iron and Wine
Gary Jules
Regina Spektor
Esthero
to name a few

hey Christine, sounds like everything is going well :)
listy goodness, it's always interesting to read these (it's like I'm looking through your bookcase and CD rack... but in a non-stalkery way). I really should do the same on my blog occasionally!
take care,
Michael XX
